<image:title>LATEST - The Saltmarket Six… Coming Soon! - IMAGE: Martin Clark Photography</image:title>
<image:caption>The Saltmarket Six Theatre Alliance are known for bringing historic Scottish stories to life through dance and music. In 1928, Glasgow’s East End was marked by loyalty, rivalry, and unwritten rules. Alleys became battlegrounds and violence was a language of its own. The Saltmarket Six examines the fragile relationship between two local teenage gangs — the Young Calton and the Young Southside Stickers. Both groups grew up in the same streets and faced the same struggles, yet they were pushed into conflict by invisible lines drawn long before their own stories began. When one gang member was killed, shockwaves were felt throughout Bridgeton, escalating tensions and turning the neighbourhood into a place of suspicion and fear. Theatre Alliance’s new production explores how pride, neglect and territory shaped the identities of these young men and women, creating bonds that could protect them or put them at risk. But it is not only the streets that tell this story. The Saltmarket Six also examines the roles of the police and the press, whose scrutiny and sensationalism shaped public perception. Through headlines and official reports, myth became fact, fear became spectacle, and young lives were defined by stories told about them. This gripping new work, based on a true story, uncovers the human cost of a divided city and the young people caught in the crossfire. The Saltmarket Six asks: What happens when a community is left to define justice for itself?</image:caption>

<image:title>LATEST - A new show…. focusing on an incredible true Scottish story - PICTURED - The company ‘The Tumbling Lassie’ pictured in the oldest surviving music hall The Brittania Panopticon. Image credit Martin Clark.</image:title>
<image:caption>The Tumbling Lassie - A New Scottish Musical “There are no slaves in Scotland.” This August, we premiere our brand new show ‘The Tumbling Lassie’ at The New Atheneum Theatre within the Royal Conservatoire Scotland. In 1687, a remarkable legal case unfolded in the Scottish courts – one that would echo through the centuries as a powerful testament to the value of human freedom. A young girl, known only to history as ‘the tumbling lassie’ was rescued by the Scots of Harden after escaping a life of exploitation as an acrobat in a travelling show. Mr Reid, a travelling showman, claimed the child as his property. After all, he had bought her from her mother. The Court of Session in Edinburgh responded with a simple and profound declaration proclaiming that slavery had no place in Scots law – ‘We have no slaves in Scotland’. The Tumbling Lassie brings the story of this largely forgotten but profoundly significant moment in Scottish legal history to life. The Tumbling Lassie herself, lost to history without even a recorded name, becomes the centre of our story – not merely a victim, but a symbol of resilience, freedom and the enduring fight against human trafficking and modern slavery. It challenges us to reflect on how far we have come – and how far we still have to go – in safeguarding the rights and dignity of the most vulnerable in society. This production is more than a window to the past – it is a call to action. Today, millions around the world still suffer in conditions of slavery and human trafficking. We are proud to bring this powerful story to the stage, honouring the tumbling lassie herself and all those who continue the struggle for freedom today. This production proudly acknowledges the work of The Tumbling Lassie Committee, a Scottish-based initiative named after the historic case, which raises awareness and funds to support victims of modern slavery and human trafficking. Through events, outreach, and advocacy, the Committee keeps the legacy of the tumbling lassie alive by helping those whose freedom is still at risk.</image:caption>

Last year, we presented our first original musical theatre piece ‘Silenced’. Once again, we will explore a new project for our next musical in May 2024. Many thousands of women – most of them young and unmarried – were forced to give up their babies for adoption until the late 1970s. In 2023, First Minister Nicola Sturgeon issued a formal apology for the practice describing it as ‘unjust and profoundly wrong’ ‘The Fallen’ focuses on a number of stories of the girls who were cruelly labelled ‘The Fallen Girls’. This is a story that needs to be told. The show will be written and directed by our Artistic Director Marlisa Ross, with new music and other musical arrangements by Stuart Bird. <image:caption>Theatre Alliance is delighted to announce the return of their hit production Knockshinnoch this September. Following the sell out premier of our show Knockshinnoch in January detailing the story of the Knockshinnoch mining disaster, we are honoured and humbled to have been invited to perform the show once again in the very heart of the community where it was set. The show will run for a very special performance at New Cumnock Town Hall on Sunday 10th September in partnership with the New Cumnock Events Group 2010 to mark the anniversary of the disaster. On 7th September 1950, New Cumnock witnessed one of the biggest disasters in Scottish mining history when 129 men were trapped in Knockshinnoch Castle Colliery for three days. In one of the most remarkable and heroic rescues ever attempted, 116 of those men were saved on the third day. Tragically, 13 of the miners lost their lives in the disaster. Knockshinnoch, a dance theatre production, focuses on the experiences of the 116 miners who were trapped underground for 3 days, uncertain if they would survive or ever see their families again. It’s a story of perseverance, hope and camaraderie in the face of disaster. Tickets for this special performance are free and the time of press, the event is sold out. This performance was made possible with assistance from The National Lottery Community Fund.</image:caption>

<image:title>LATEST - Out of adversity… forms an alliance! - (IMAGE | Marlisa Ross & Stuart Bird in rehearsal)</image:title>
<image:caption>Theatre Alliance was created by Marlisa Ross and Stuart Bird. Having met in 2016 and worked closely alongside each other on many theatre, dance & musical theatre projects, they formed a friendship through a shared vision and their love of theatre. Both Marlisa & Stuart both found themselves seeking new challenges after facing unexpected redundancy during the pandemic lockdown in March 2020. It’s been a testing time for everyone, but both Marlisa & Stuart saw their situation as an opportunity to explore new challenges and work together. Our mission? To strive to create challenging and innovative dance and musical theatre through untold stories, exploration and performance. We want to tell stories that dare to be heard, and present work that challenges the norm. New work, rarely performed work, exciting and innovative work. Theatre Alliance plan to launch in Kilmarnock in January 2021 (subject to coronavirus restrictions) with our Women’s Dance Company. Against all the odds that our world faces today, with the challenges of the Coronavirus pandemic, we will meet, with safety and social distancing in mind to explore new theatrical adventures… together!</image:caption>

The new work is a semi-verbatim piece, focusing on the experiences and challenges of growing up as a teenage girl in Ayrshire over the past 60 years. The piece is based on interviews and is a personal portrait of life as a teenage girl in the past, present and future. Sixteen was presented at The Gaiety in Ayr as a part of The National Festival of Youth Theatre in July 2022.</image:caption>
