The Tumbling Lassie - A New Scottish Musical
‘But we have no slaves in Scotland’.
In 1687, a remarkable legal case unfolded in the Scottish courts – one that would echo through the centuries as a powerful testament to the value of human freedom. A young girl, known only to history as ‘the tumbling lassie’ was rescued by the Scots of Harden after escaping a life of exploitation as an acrobat in a travelling show. Mr Reid, a travelling showman, claimed the child as his property. After all, he had bought her from her mother. The Court of Session in Edinburgh responded with a simple and profound declaration proclaiming that slavery had no place in Scots law – ‘We have no slaves in Scotland’.
The Tumbling Lassie brings the story of this largely forgotten but profoundly significant moment in Scottish legal history to life. The Tumbling Lassie herself, lost to history without even a recorded name, becomes the centre of our story – not merely a victim, but a symbol of resilience, freedom and the enduring fight against human trafficking and modern slavery. It challenges us to reflect on how far we have come – and how far we still have to go – in safeguarding the rights and dignity of the most vulnerable in society. This production is more than a window to the past – it is a call to action. Today, millions around the world still suffer in conditions of slavery and human trafficking.
We are proud to bring this powerful story to the stage, honouring the tumbling lassie herself and all those who continue the struggle for freedom today.
This production proudly acknowledges the work of The Tumbling Lassie Committee, a Scottish-based initiative named after the historic case, which raises awareness and funds to support victims of modern slavery and human trafficking. Through events, outreach, and advocacy, the Committee keeps the legacy of the tumbling lassie alive by helping those whose freedom is still at risk.
