The Standing Eight
Eight women. Eight stories. One ring.
The Standing Eight is a new verbatim theatre production bringing the real voices of women in boxing to the stage. Built from interviews with 8 women from Scotland’s boxing communities, the piece explores the experiences, identities and challenges that shape their journeys within the sport.
The production considers themes of access, training culture, resilience and the shifting visibility of women in a traditionally male-dominated environment. Grounded in lived experience, the work offers an honest and nuanced insight into both the demands and rewards of boxing, from the discipline of training to the pressures of competition and the importance of community.
Created by Theatre Alliance, The Standing Eight combines text and movement to translate testimony into performance. Drawing on a physical language inspired by the rhythms and routines of the sport, the production weaves together spoken word, choreography and ensemble performance to create an immersive theatrical experience.
Presented as part of the Glasgow 2026 Festival, The Standing Eight reflects on a period of change within women’s boxing, capturing both personal and collective histories, and offering a considered portrait of a community continuing to evolve..
